A French kitchen, fresh, artisanal produce and a warm room, at a price that stays friendly.
About us
Mej. Janssen is a convivial café-restaurant in the little alley behind the Korenmarkt, made for people who truly enjoy life. We have been here since 1976, which makes us the oldest restaurant in Arnhem. Tim Vulperhorst has been at the helm since September 2014. The building has largely been renovated, but the atmosphere of the old days is still very much there.
We are a real family business and we cook with the seasons: what reaches the table depends on what is at its best right now. Every dish is made with fresh, artisanal produce. As a French restaurant in the centre of Arnhem, the classics are simply on our menu: lobster bisque, escargots, confit de canard and tournedos, with our well-known mussels as a lasting favourite. With every dish we are glad to suggest a wine or a beer to go with it.

At the table
The plate arrives with the lobster, the prawns and the herbs already in it. The soup goes over it here, so you see it happen and nothing sits cooling in the kitchen.
From the cellar and the tap
We like to pour something that suits your dish. Do ask — we are happy to help you choose.

Getting here & parking
That comes with one thing we would rather tell you beforehand than afterwards: you cannot park at the door. The Duizelsteeg is in the low-traffic heart of Arnhem, in the little alley behind the Korenmarkt.
The good news is that you are outside again in no time. These three car parks are all a few minutes' walk away:
Good to know
No. We are on the Duizelsteeg in the low-traffic centre, right by the Korenmarkt. You can park in one of the car parks nearby: the Blauwe Golven car park on the Nieuwe Plein, the Arnhem-Centraal car park on the Stationsplein or the Rozet car park on the Langstraat. All three are some 230 to 300 metres away, a few minutes on foot.
Tuesday to Sunday from 5 pm to 10 pm. We are closed on Mondays.
We are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
You can book straight from our website, or give us a call on 026 379 65 59. That way we know you are coming and your table is ready.
Generous, with the French kitchen as its base. Our chefs are trained in it and every dish is made with fresh, artisanal produce. Our mussels are the house favourite.
Yes. Among them the WijnSpijs Wandeling: you walk through town and get a matching glass with every course. Do ask us what is possible.
Yes. For groups we make separate arrangements. Give us a call on 026 379 65 59 and we will look at what works on your date.
There is plenty you can eat gluten-free, because we make a lot ourselves in the kitchen. If you have an allergy or a dietary need, put it in the comments field with your booking or tell us when you arrive. There is a guest with a dietary need at the table almost every evening; it is no trouble for us.
